Dativ Personalpronomen
Hallo! Guten Tag!
The topic has got two concepts - Dativ and Personalpronomen. Before
jumping straightaway to the topic, it is recommended to know about the
various cases in German and, of course, personal pronouns. Therefore, I
suggest you to go through these two posts first: German Grammar Overview and Personal Pronouns and Verb Conjugation. You may skip these, if you already know the basics.
So basically Dativ Personalpronomen is nothing but a personal pronoun in a sentence that is the indirect or beneficiary object of that sentence.
Examples:
1. I help him.
I am the subject, to help is the verb and him takes the dative case in the sentence because it is the beneficiary object of the sentence.
In German, I = ich, to help = helfen, him (Dative Case) = ihm. Therefore, "I help him." is "Ich helfe ihm." in German.
Please note that helfen is a dative verb. To know more about dative verbs, go through Dativ Verben.
2. I buy her a bag.
I am the subject, to buy is the verb, bag takes the accusative case and her takes the dative case in the sentence because it is the beneficiary object of the sentence.
In German, I = ich, to buy = kaufen, a bag = eine Tasche, her (Dative Case) = ihr. Therefore, "I buy her a bag" is "Ich kaufe ihr eine Tasche." in German.
