The Colors: Die Farben
Color
plays an essentially significant role in the world we live. Notice the
difference that colors have made in the above picture. Black and white
rainbow looks so dull and lifeless, while the colorful one brings smiles
to faces. Sure did to mine! ![🙂]()
Everybody knows that red conveys "stop" and green conveys "go". But do you know what these colors are called in German? Well, red is called rot in German. Here's the list of colors, i.e., die Farben [Farben means colors. The singular for Farben is: die Farbe. Have you entered die Farbe | die Farben entry in your plurals' list as mentioned in Nomen: Singular und Plural?]:
Light is called hell in German, while dark is called dunkel. So, here's an opposite pair! By the way, opposite is called das Gegenteil in German.
Coming back to die Farben! To indicate a light or dark version of any color, you may prefix it with hell or dunkel, respectively. For example:
hellblau implies light blue.
dunkelblau implies dark blue.
Was ist Ihre Lieblingsfarbe?
This question means: What is your favorite color? My favorite color is red. So I'd say: Meine Lieblingsfarbe ist rot.
