The very first class is always about few general questions and commonly used words/phrases/greetings. The idea is to make the class familiar with this wonderful language.

Few General Questions

German is not like English in terms of YOU. That is, in English we use "you" to address somebody both formally and informally. German is rather like Hindi in this respect, wherein we use aap and tu for formal and informal "you", respectively. The questions listed below are framed using formal you.
 
1. Question: What is your name?
    Answer: My name is Michel Neumann.
 There are following possibilities to put this question:
1.1. Frage: Wie ist Ihr Name?
       Antwort: Mein Name ist Michel Neumann.
1.2. Frage: Wie heissen Sie?
       Antwort: Ich heisse Michel Neumann.
2. Question: What is your first name?
    Answer: My first name is Michel.
    Frage: Wie ist Ihr Vorname?
    Antwort: Mein Vorname ist Michel.
3. Question: What is your family name/surname/last name?
    Answer: My family name/surname/last name is Neumann.
    Frage: Wie ist Ihr Familienname?
    Antwort: Mein Familienname ist Neumann.
4. Question: Where are you from?
    Answer: I'm from Germany.
    Frage: Woher kommen Sie?
    Antwort: Ich komme aus Deutschland.
5. Question: Where do you live?
    Answer: I live in Belin.
    Frage: Wo wohnen Sie?
    Antwort: Ich wohne in Berlin.
6. Question: How old are you?
    Answer: I'm twenty nine years old.
    Frage: Wie alt sind Sie?
    Antwort: Ich bin neunundzwanzig Jahre alt.
7. Question: Which languages do you speak?
    Answer: I speak German and English.
    Frage: Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie?
    Antwort: Ich kann Deutsch und Englisch.
8. Question: What is your mother tongue?
    Answer: My mother tongue is German.
    Frage: Wie ist Ihre Muttersprache?
    Antwort: Meine Muttersprache ist Deutsch.
9. Question: How are you?
    Answer: I'm fine.
    Frage: Wie geht es Ihnen?
    Antwort: Es geht mir gut.

Commonly used words/greetings

1. Hallo! : Hello!
2. Guten Morgen! : Good Morning!
3. Guten Nachmittag! : Good Afternoon!
4. Guten Abend! : Good Evening!
5. Gute Nacht! : Good Night!
6. Guten Tag! : Good Day!
7. Entschuldigung! : Excuse me!
8. Tut mir leid! : I'm sorry!
9. Danke! : Thank You!
10. Bitte! : Please!
11. Auf Wiedersehen! : Goodbye!
12. Ja! : Yes!
13. Nein! : No!
13. Jein! : May be!

Nomen: Singular und Plural

In the previous post we learned that every noun is associated with an article. Irrespective of the fact whether that noun is masculine, feminine or neutral in its singular form, its article changes to die in its plural form. So we know that article changes, but what about that noun itself? Well, it changes too. For example, in English, plural form of car is cars.
